    It doesn’t matter how good you are. Fields like design are always changing, shifting, and growing. The only way to stay on the edge is to constantly learn and improve your design skills. These tips will help you make progress and improve your design skills no matter the level you are at.
     

    1. Seek out opportunities to study with a master who has scaled the graphic design heights you can only dream about today.
    2. Deciding on a specialty early in your design career helps you spend more time developing the relevant techniques.
    3. Show your work, whether it is on social media, design blogs, or industry forums. If they shred them, that gives you the opportunity to evolve.
    4. Master and relish Photoshop, Illustrator, and other design tools.
    5. Collaborating with someone more experienced from the design community, teaches you a better design perspective and opens you up to new techniques of the trade.
    6. Ask for feedback, either from our mentor or other experienced designers, or both.
    7. When it comes to design, experimentation is the key. Trying out new font styles, new color combinations, and experimenting with different tools not only give you more exposure but can also spark inspiration.
    8. Join a graphic design community and actively involve yourself in debates and discussions. By surrounding yourself with like minds (online or in-person) you’re giving yourself the opportunity to grow as an artist.
    9. Keep informed about the latest developments taking place in the industry. Visit forums to see what people are saying, and get information on the latest software that will improve your work.
    10. Always be on good terms with your clients. Resolve any issues amicably - as much as possible - so your client relationships stay in good standing.

    Blogging is one of those jobs that seems easy until you have to do it. Fortunately, it does get easier, and with time and practice, you’ll be blogging like a professional.

    1. Generate ideas
    Coming up with winning ideas is often the most difficult part of blogging, so it’s crucial to carve out time for creative thinking. To get started, consider your goals, niche, your target audience, and what you want to offer readers and customers. Begin by jotting down the types of stories your readers might be interested in.

    2. Write a great headline
    There are two main approaches you can take to writing blog post headlines. You can either decide on your final headline before you write the rest of your post (and use your headline to structure your outline), or you can write your blog post with a working title and see what fits when you’re done.

    3. Add Subheadings and Shorter Paragraphs to Break up the Page

    Formatting is very important for blog posts. Usually, people skim through the content before they actually decide to read it, so it’s recommended to break up your article with subheadings. Another good tip is to use shorter paragraphs to help your readers work their way through your post.

    4. Write as you talk

    Writing like you’re talking to your reader can make them feel like they’re having a conversation with someone, rather than actually reading a post. This way your readers will feel like you’re talking to them one-on-one.

How to Find a Photographer for your Event
  • Description

    It is a given that when photographing an event, details matter. A lot of hard work goes into producing an event of any size and a photographer's job is in part to capture those details. However, a photographer’s priority should be on capturing defining moments of an event that both tell a story and evoke a feeling. Every image should be about something, whether that be an emotion, reaction, or an interaction, there should be meaning behind the photograph. These are the images that offer a window into what it was like to be there. Prior to the day of your event, it is a good idea to brief your photographer on the series of events if any, and provide them with a written timeline.

    One of the ways to find a good photographer is by talking to your network. This is often the best way to ensure you get someone who’s reliable. Talk to your colleagues and friends for positive recommendations.

    The next good place to start your search is on one of the many freelance job sites around the web. Also, photography associations have large databases where you can find a range of photographers in your area. Talk with the venue or vendors who have worked in the venue about photographers they’ve seen in action before. Is there someone who stands out to them for their impressive work? You might just find a hidden gem this way.

    Look at the communication channels you can reach the photographers on. Do they have a website? Email? Phone? Social media? The more options you have to reach them, the better. Check their portfolio to see the quality of their work. Focus on the examples that are relevant to your event. Also, look out for how many events they have done in the past. Online reviews and personal references are perhaps the best way to evaluate an event photographer.

    Before hiring the best photographer you should ask the photographer different questions so that you learn their abilities, and determine how you can take advantage of their abilities.

    For WikiStage organizers – you can write about your motivation to become a WikiStage organizer, what was your role in the team, and what did you learn from this experience. Many of our organizers are sharing their experience and give meaningful advice on how to organize a WikiStage event for our future organizers. This way they are contributing to our Community which is all about sharing knowledge.

6 Event Photography Tips for Getting Your Best Shots

    1. The first step is to ask event organizer questions such as these:

    - What kind of event is this
    - What kind of images do you want from this event? Are you looking for headshots?
    - What are the most important moments
    - What style of photography do you like
    - What do you not like?

    No one wants a disappointing event photography shoot because there were miscommunication and this way you can make sure that the organizer is well aware of the limits of the photo session.

    2. Pre-Event Photos Can Contribute to the Overall Story

    Photograph the venue, table settings, and other beautiful details before the guests arrive. These are just as important as the story that unfolds. Organizers will appreciate a snap of the setting that they spent so much time (and money) on.

    3. Map out shots of speakers and sponsors ahead of time

    If the event features speakers, sponsors, or stakeholders who absolutely need to be in photos, you should know this ahead of time. Also, If there are key attendees who must be photographed, the event organizer should point them out. Note on a map of the venue where people will be coming from and walking to so you can take great shots of them.

    4. Good event photography is all about expressions

    Event photography is much more than just aiming the camera and shooting. It’s about seeking out poignant moments, powerful expressions, and often just waiting for them to appear.

    While you often will need to capture some environmental shots, the photographs of people are the stars of the show, and to take a good photograph of people you need good expressions. Set up a shot and wait for someone to smile or react.

    5. Capture a variety of posed photographs

    Remember to always take posed photographs from events that you photograph.  Yes, the candid shots are more interesting and are generally the best, but people also want a few posed photos.

    6. Use abstract shots for marketing

    It’s important to get shots of attendees having fun, but it’s also important to get more abstract shots that aren’t focused on individuals. This is especially true if you’ll be using your corporate event photography for marketing.

Getting Started in Event Photography

    Are you thinking about becoming an event photographer?  Sometimes it can be a little hard to break into event photography, but it is possible!  You are probably going to have to volunteer for some time to get started.

    Before you present yourself as a professional expert in event photography, you’ll want to gain some experience. One of the best ways to gain experience is by volunteering at local events. Try offering your photography services to a local charitable organization that may not have the budget to hire professional photographers. Another alternative is to contact an established event photographer and offer to assist at an event. You can also bring a camera along to events you personally attend.

    Perhaps you know someone who is or knows a photographer or maybe you know an event planner. But if that is not the case, the advice is to just let people know you are a photographer so that they will think of you when they need one. Do not ignore social media either.

    The next important thing is buying photography gear. Use the money you save to start building your lens collection. Remember lenses make images more so than cameras. Additionally, unlike cameras, lenses hardly depreciate in value.

    And finally,  put together an online portfolio (online is the key word here) that has at least three things: a portfolio of images, a page with your smiling face and a biography or summary of your experience, and several ways to contact you.

4 Ways to Sponsor the Event

    Sponsoring events in your community can help out organizations in your neighborhood or city and provides real benefits for your business. Here are some of the tips on how you can sponsor an event:

    1. Cash/financial sponsors

    As the name suggests, cash or financial sponsors, are sponsors who literally give money to an event organizer in exchange for the benefits outlined in a  sponsorship agreement. This may include logo placement on signage or promotional materials, pre-event content creation, promotions, and keynote speeches.

    2. Media sponsors
    They are, by definition, companies that are able to provide financial aid in securing media coverage for your event. For example, a media sponsor might pay for an advertisement in a local paper or cover the cost of filming a TV commercial. In some cases, they may also publicize your event through their social media channels, write an article in a publication, or even publish a blog post about your event and organization on their blog/website.

    3. Food
    We will all agree, an event isn’t complete without readily available food. Catering an event can be extremely expensive, because of this, it is extremely important to try to find a food sponsor for your next event. There are many different ways to offer brand activation around food at your event -  company-branded drinks, pop-up restaurants, etc.

    4. Venue partners
    Having the right venue partner is a huge advantage when it comes to the overall success of the event. Venue partners will allow organizations to host events at their venue in exchange for either a discounted or completely free rate. 10 Steps to Promote Your Event on Social Media

    Social media channels are very powerful tools for promoting events. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn can be excellent ways to spread a word about your WikiStage conference. Make sure you’re present online in order to reach your conference’s target audience, engage with them and keep them informed!

    1. Choose Social Media channels

    The first step is to choose the right social media channels based on your target audience. Choose between Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn or Snapchat which are best suited to your target audience’s demographics, interests, and online behavior. You can use more than one or all of them but keep in mind that all your accounts should be actively managed - sometimes it’s better to focus on one single platform and do it right. Many WikiStage organizers chose Facebook.

    2. Create an event on Facebook and promote it on your event page

    Creating an event gives your audience a place to find the details, see who’s attending, and ask questions. This is also a great place to encourage networking before the event. The advantage of an event page is also sharing by attendees.

    3. Use targeted advertising

    Facebook allows you to target your promotions in extremely specific ways. This requires an investment, but it can make it easier to connect with people who still don't know for your event. This investment doesn't have to be big to help you reach a large audience.  

    4. Share a teaser video

    It’s a good idea to give potential participants a teaser of the great experience that awaits them at your event. Share some of the most interesting bits of information to show them that your event is exactly where they should be. 

    5. Create images featuring each speaker

Why do we support women speakers?

    Many high-profile conferences and events lack gender balance, despite there often being no shortage of qualified women. The absence of women at public professional forums is a problem. Because speakers are usually male, audiences are given a narrow perspective. The lack of diversity limits the quality of the conversation and potential outcomes.

    As an event organizer, you are well aware of the role that speakers can play in the success of your event. Event organizers often tell us that they find it more difficult to find women speakers. Nevertheless, we think it is worth the extra effort to look for great female speakers. A good mix and balance is a very enriching ingredient in every WikiStage conference.

    WikiStage strongly encourages women speakers to speak at our events.
